Common iPhone Charging Port Problems and Fixes

A phone that won't charge reliably is genuinely stressful — and the cause isn't always the charging port itself. Here's how to work through the possibilities before assuming the worst.

Start with the cheapest possibility: the cable

Cables take a lot of physical stress — bending at the connector, getting caught in bags, pulled at odd angles — and they're by far the most common point of failure in a charging setup. Before anything else, try a different cable and a different wall adapter if you have one. It sounds obvious, but it resolves more "charging port" problems than anything else on this list.

Lint and debris in the port

Pocket lint builds up inside charging ports over time and can physically block the connector from making a proper contact. Switch the phone off, and using a wooden or plastic toothpick (never metal, and never anything conductive), very gently check for and remove any visible debris. If you can see it but can't safely remove it, that's exactly the kind of five-minute job we can do at the counter.

"It charges, but only at a certain angle"

This is a strong sign the port's internal pins have become bent or worn, so the connection is only reliable when the cable is held at a specific position. It's a physical fault inside the port, not something a clean will fix, and it tends to get worse rather than better over time.

It stopped charging after a drop or water exposure

A drop can knock the charging port's internal connector loose or misaligned. Water exposure can cause the port's contacts to corrode. Both are physical damage to the port itself, and in the case of water damage, potentially a sign of damage elsewhere in the phone too — worth a full check, not just the port.

It charges slowly, but does charge

This one is more often a cable or adapter issue — a damaged cable, or an adapter that doesn't support fast charging, can both cause slow charging without the port being at fault at all. Worth ruling out with a known-good cable before assuming it's the phone.

When it's genuinely the port

If you've tried a different cable and adapter and it's still unreliable, the charging port assembly itself likely needs replacing. It's a common, well-understood repair on most iPhone models, and we check it for free before quoting — so you're never paying to find out what's actually wrong.
